Can't even think of a title for this one.

Overheard at the beauty shop:

Stylist to customer: So, are you doing anything special for the 4th of July?

Customer: Yes, we're going to go up to Canada to visit a friend.

Stylist: Oh, that sounds cool. Will there be any special 4th of July stuff going on up there?

Customer: [after a several second pause] I don't know if they celebrate the 4th in Canada

Stylist: [with surprise in her voice] They don't! How come?

Another stylist from across the shop: The 4th of July is our Independence Day - not Canada's

Stylist: Don't they have an Independence Day in Canada?

Second stylist: I don't know. But I don't think they celebrate ours.

Stylist: Huh, that's strange.

Customer: I'll let you know when I get back.

I just sat there quietly, listening in awe.

Sometimes Americans make me feel so sad. Our collective ignorance of the "outside world" is astounding!

When I went to England on the 4th of July (back in 1994), I remember one of my co-workers asked me if I would arrive in London in time to see the fireworks. I told her I was pretty sure England wouldn't be celebrating the day of America's independence from them. Their view of the whole "Revolutionary War thing" is quite different from ours.

Jenni - now that's REALLY sad!

That was a good one! I can't believe that it was an actual conversation. Too much!

Unbelievable - it just goes to show why other nations view us as "Ugly Americans," like we are the only ones in the world.
