Distance is not a good thing
One of the downsides of today's society is that families so often live far apart. And that distance is painfully apparent when you have a week like we just did. My brother's newest baby, Alex, was sick and in the hospital. My stomach was in knots for several days as I clung to my cell phone waiting for updates through phone calls or text messages. It was hard to concentrate on anything on this end because my thoughts were with them constantly. I worried about my brother and his wife who felt so hopeless at times and were exhausted both from worry and from lack of sleep. And it was so frustrating for me to be so far away and to know that my SIL was at the hospital alone with the baby while my brother had to be home with their other children. Somehow that just didn't feel right.
They all survived the ordeal. Alex is back home now and seems to be doing fine. Hopefully Tony and Nicki can get some rest and be relieved of their worry. Ed and I are planning a quick trip to see them in April and I can't wait!
But I do so wish that we were all closer to each other - for both the good times and the bad.

oh i feel for you on this, sandi, cuz i know how close you are to your family. i cannot imagine (years from now) what it might feel like to have my daughters marry and live far away. i'm glad alex is doing better.
Wow, what a trauma - I'm glad that baby Alex is better. I'll bet you'll be counting the days until your visit in April...
Thanks for your support, Sis. It really helped me get through this knowing that you all cared so much and were there for us. Alex is doing so much better . . . aside from a few small surgical scars on his belly which will always be a reminder, we are ready to leave this behind us and move forward.
Here's a toast to having a baby who can finally eat without it being followed by projectile vomiting! Allelujia . . .

im so glad to hear alex is doing better! it is always so hard to see a tiny one so sick when they just get here.
I'm so glad that everything is OK now. Distance really does make everything so hard.
